Financial Independence
Under financial independence we have covered how the SHGs were formed. Following are some stories which are to be included as subsection under SHGs.
History of Self Help Groups at Sangola:
In 1996 MBUP started the formation of SHGs. There were only 6 SHGs (3 in Sangola and 3 in the nearby village). The volunteers were learning the management of SHGs and so were the SHG members. The number of SHGs grew in multiples in the subsequent years. Today in 2008 these women have nearly 300 groups in operation, covering about 4500 women with a strong support from MBUP. After 5 years after we formed the first few SHGs we started seeing the results. The women became bold, they started attending the meetings regularly and they started to understand the financial matters. Most importantly their importance within their family grew as they could obtain the loan when needed. With loans having smaller interest rates, the repayment became regular and the financial conditions of the family imporved. They started small scale business units and started earning money. Surrounding women saw all these developments and they also requested for the formation of SHGs for them This is how the process of formation of SHGs accelerated.
